Partridge & Mille Fleur Brahma

The partridge clan groups Brahma varieties defined by the penciling pattern — a repeating series of fine dark concentric markings following the feather outline, produced by the Pg gene complex. All varieties on this page share this foundational pattern. What distinguishes them is the ground color (gold vs silver), additional dilution genes (lavender), or the mottling gene (mo) which adds white tips to produce the mille fleur effect.

How the Partridge clan works

The partridge pattern is produced by the interaction of the Pg gene (pattern gene) with the e-locus. On an eb (brown/partridge) or e+ (wild-type) background, Pg generates the characteristic double or triple penciling seen in the hen — fine dark lines running parallel to the feather edge. In roosters, the same genetic combination produces black-striped hackle and saddle feathers with a largely black body.

The penciling pattern in Brahma is a double or triple pencil (two to three concentric dark lines per feather) rather than the single pencil seen in some other breeds. This distinction is important for show evaluation in European standards.

Ground color is determined by the S locus: gold-base birds (s+/s+) show warm gold or chestnut tones; silver-base birds (S/–) show silver-white. The two most important partridge varieties in Brahma — Gold Partridge and Silver Pencilled (Dark Brahma) — represent the gold and silver branches of the same underlying pattern.

Lavender dilution (lav/lav) applied to gold partridge produces Isabel Partridge, a diluted version where dark penciling becomes grey-purple on a pale straw ground. The mottling gene (mo/mo) applied to partridge produces mille fleur — currently under development at Wolfhoeve.

Gold Partridge

Recognized

One of the most richly marked Brahma varieties. Hens carry a warm golden-chestnut ground with double or triple black penciling running parallel to each feather edge — the penciling should be sharp, evenly spaced, and complete around the full feather circumference. The breast is a solid salmon-red in the upper zone, fading to chestnut toward the fluff. The hackle is golden with black shaft striping and a fine gold fringe. Roosters are dramatically different: they carry an orange-red hackle and saddle with black striping, a largely black breast and body, and a black main tail with bronze-green gloss. The wing bow is chestnut-red; the wing bay is black.

Sexual dimorphism: Strong dimorphism. Hens: triple-penciled throughout. Roosters: orange-red hackle, black body. Assessment of penciling quality is only possible in hens.
At Wolfhoeve: Gold Partridge is a well-established variety at Wolfhoeve. We select on penciling completeness and evenness, hackle fringe definition, and the depth of the ground color. We reject birds that show single penciling, incomplete penciling around feather edges, or ground color that is too yellow or too dark.

Silver Pencilled

The silver-base partridge, known as the Dark Brahma in American standards. Hens have a silver-white ground with sharp, clean black penciling — the high contrast between the silver base and the black markings makes penciling defects very visible, which makes this the most demanding variety to select well. The hackle is silver with black shaft striping. Roosters are dramatically patterned: silver hackle and saddle striped in black, with a black body and breast. The wing bow is silver; the wing bay is black.

Sexual dimorphism: One of the most strongly dimorphic Brahma varieties. Hen assessment requires examination of penciling completeness and ground color purity. Rooster quality is assessed on hackle stripe definition and silver ground purity.
At Wolfhoeve: Dark Brahma / Silver Pencilled is one of the three original APA-recognized Brahma varieties. We maintain it in our silver-base pen alongside White Black Columbian and Silver Black-Laced. Selection pressure is on penciling precision — we have found that ground color purity and penciling sharpness are the two traits most likely to slip without consistent selection.

Blue Silver Pencilled

One copy of blue dilution (Bl/bl+) applied to the Silver Pencilled base softens the black penciling to a cool blue-grey, while the silver-white ground remains. The result is a pale, refined bird with blue-grey penciling on silver-white — one of the most subtle and elegant Brahma varieties. The penciling structure is identical to Silver Pencilled; it is only the color of the dark element that changes.

Sexual dimorphism: Identical dimorphism to Silver Pencilled: rooster has blue-grey hackle stripes and blue-grey body with silver saddle and hackle ground; hen shows blue-grey penciling on silver ground throughout.
At Wolfhoeve: Blue Dark Brahma breeds as 50% blue, 25% black (Silver Pencilled), 25% splash when crossed with another blue. We maintain this variety within the silver pen and use it as part of our blue series management alongside Blue Columbian.

Isabel Partridge

Rare

The lavender gene (lav/lav) is an autosomal recessive that dilutes all eumelanin (black) to a soft, even grey-lilac. Applied to a Gold Partridge base, it converts the sharp black penciling to a muted grey-purple and shifts the warm gold ground to a pale cream-straw. The result is known as Isabel Partridge — also called lavender double-penciled in some contexts. The penciling structure remains identical to Gold Partridge in spacing and completeness; only the tone of the dark element changes. The overall effect is an extraordinarily delicate, almost watercolor-like bird.

Sexual dimorphism: Dimorphism follows Gold Partridge: rooster has lavender-diluted hackle stripes on cream ground, body is blue-grey rather than black. Hen is fully penciled in grey-purple on cream-straw.
At Wolfhoeve: Isabel Partridge is rare in Brahma. We are working to establish it alongside the Gold Partridge line, consolidating the lavender gene (which requires two copies to express, making it slow to fix in a population) while maintaining type. This is a multi-year program.

Mille Fleur

Mille fleur — French for "a thousand flowers" — is one of the most complex feather patterns in domestic poultry. Each feather carries three distinct elements: a warm ocher-brown ground, a green-glossy black spangle in the center of the feather, and a clean white mottle tip at the apex. The pattern is produced by the interaction of the partridge base (Pg), the Db/Ml lacing modifier haplotype that generates the spangle, and the mottling gene (mo) that adds the white tip. The pattern typically intensifies with each successive moult; birds often look their best in their second or third year.

Sexual dimorphism: Both sexes express mille fleur. Roosters tend to show a higher proportion of spangle on the hackle and breast; hens distribute the pattern more evenly across the body.
At Wolfhoeve: Mille fleur does not currently exist in giant Brahma. Establishing it requires introducing genes from outside the breed through a planned outcross program, followed by multiple generations of backcrossing to restore full Brahma type. This is a long-horizon project — introducing a color that does not yet exist in the breed, on the largest domestic chicken frame, while maintaining the structural integrity that defines the Brahma. Breeding the Partridge clan

The partridge clan requires strict pen separation between gold-base and silver-base birds for the same reason as the Co clan: one generation of cross-contamination produces intermediate ground color that is difficult to resolve. Gold Partridge and Silver Pencilled birds are maintained in separate pens at Wolfhoeve.

The lavender gene presents a specific challenge: it is autosomal recessive, meaning that a bird must carry two copies (lav/lav) to express the dilution. Carriers (lav/+) look identical to non-carriers. Consolidating lavender into a line therefore requires progeny testing to identify carriers, followed by carrier-to-carrier crosses to produce homozygous birds. This is the primary reason Isabel Partridge is a multi-year program.

The mille fleur program requires genes not currently present in Brahma. The Db/Ml haplotype that generates the spangle element of the mille fleur pattern must be sourced from outside the breed. Introducing this through a planned cross program means several early generations will show poor Brahma type. We prioritize type recovery over color expression in these generations — the color will stabilize once the structural foundation is correct.
